NRW Holdings (ASX:NWH) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To A$0.085
The board of NRW Holdings Limited (ASX:NWH) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of A$0.085 on the 6th of April, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 6.1%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

NRW Holdings' Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Prior to this announcement, NRW Holdings' dividend was making up a very large proportion of earnings, and the company was also not generating any cash flow to offset this. We think that this practice can make the dividend quite risky in the future.
EPS is set to grow by 35.5% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could reach 79%, which is on the higher side, but certainly still feasible.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2013, the annual payment back then was A$0.16, compared to the most recent full-year payment of A$0.17. Its dividends have grown at less than 1% per annum over this time frame. It's encouraging to see some dividend growth, but the dividend has been cut at least once, and the size of the cut would eliminate most of the growth anyway, which makes this less attractive as an income investment.
NRW Holdings Might Find It Hard To Grow Its Dividend
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. NRW Holdings has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 15% per annum. The payout ratio is very much on the higher end, which could mean that the growth rate will slow down in the future, and that could flow through to the dividend as well.
NRW Holdings' Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think NRW Holdings' payments are rock solid. In general, the distributions are a little bit higher than we would like, but we can't ignore the fact the quickly growing earnings gives this stock great potential in the future. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. To that end, NRW Holdings has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is potentially serious) we think you should know about.
