What Is The Ownership Structure Like For Lycopodium Limited (ASX:LYL)?
Every investor in Lycopodium Limited (ASX:LYL) should be aware of the most powerful shareholder groups. As Charlie Munger said 'Show me the incentive and I will show you the outcome.
Lycopodium is a smaller company with a market capitalization of AU$229m, so it may still be flying under the radar of many institutional investors. What Does The Institutional Ownership Tell Us About Lycopodium?
Institutional investors commonly compare their own returns to the returns of a commonly followed index. So they generally do consider buying larger companies that are included in the relevant benchmark index.
We can see that Lycopodium does have institutional investors; and they hold a good portion of the company's stock. This can indicate that the company has a certain degree of credibility in the investment community. However, it is best to be wary of relying on the supposed validation that comes with institutional investors. They too, get it wrong sometimes. It is not uncommon to see a big share price drop if two large institutional investors try to sell out of a stock at the same time. So it is worth checking the past earnings trajectory of Lycopodium, (below). Of course, keep in mind that there are other factors to consider, too.
We note that hedge funds don't have a meaningful investment in Lycopodium. Michael Caratti is currently the company's largest shareholder with 23% of shares outstanding. With 7.9% and 4.9% of the shares outstanding respectively, Luala Pty Ltd and Celeste Funds Management Limited are the second and third largest shareholders. Additionally, the company's CEO Peter De Leo directly holds 2.4% of the total shares outstanding.
A closer look at our ownership figures suggests that the top 11 shareholders have a combined ownership of 50% implying that no single shareholder has a majority.
While studying institutional ownership for a company can add value to your research, it is also a good practice to research analyst recommendations to get a deeper understand of a stock's expected performance. While there is some analyst coverage, the company is probably not widely covered. So it could gain more attention, down the track.
Insider Ownership Of Lycopodium
The definition of company insiders can be subjective and does vary between jurisdictions. Our data reflects individual insiders, capturing board members at the very least. Company management run the business, but the CEO will answer to the board, even if he or she is a member of it.
Most consider insider ownership a positive because it can indicate the board is well aligned with other shareholders. However, on some occasions too much power is concentrated within this group.
It seems insiders own a significant proportion of Lycopodium Limited. Insiders have a AU$76m stake in this AU$229m business. It is great to see insiders so invested in the business. It might be worth checking if those insiders have been buying recently.
General Public Ownership
The general public holds a 46% stake in Lycopodium. This size of ownership, while considerable, may not be enough to change company policy if the decision is not in sync with other large shareholders.
Private Company Ownership
Our data indicates that Private Companies hold 8.8%, of the company's shares. Private companies may be related parties. Sometimes insiders have an interest in a public company through a holding in a private company, rather than in their own capacity as an individual.
