Energy Technologies Limited's (ASX:EGY) Popularity With Investors Under Threat As Stock Sinks 26%

Energy Technologies Limited (ASX:EGY) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 26% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 37% in that time.

Even after such a large drop in price, it's still not a stretch to say that Energy Technologies' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.9x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Electrical industry in Australia, where the median P/S ratio is around 1.3x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Energy Technologies' P/S Mean For Shareholders?

The revenue growth achieved at Energy Technologies over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. One possibility is that the P/S is moderate because investors think this respectable revenue growth might not be enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. Those who are bullish on Energy Technologies will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Energy Technologies' earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is Energy Technologies' Revenue Growth Trending?

Energy Technologies' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 24% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 53% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 23% shows it's noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's curious that Energy Technologies' P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

What Does Energy Technologies' P/S Mean For Investors?

With its share price dropping off a cliff, the P/S for Energy Technologies looks to be in line with the rest of the Electrical industry. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our examination of Energy Technologies revealed its poor three-year revenue trends aren't resulting in a lower P/S as per our expectations, given they look worse than current industry outlook. When we see weak revenue with slower than industry growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, bringing the P/S back in line with expectations. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, it's hard to accept the current share price as fair value.
