Union Properties Public Joint Stock Company (DFM:UPP) Soars 28% But It's A Story Of Risk Vs Reward

Despite an already strong run, Union Properties Public Joint Stock Company (DFM:UPP) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 28% in the last thirty days. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 51% in the last year.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Union Properties may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 8.6x, since almost half of all companies in the United Arab Emirates have P/E ratios greater than 14x and even P/E's higher than 23x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.

While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, Union Properties' earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Union Properties' Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Union Properties would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 67% decrease to the company's bottom line. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with EPS growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 36% as estimated by the only analyst watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 5.5% growth forecast for the broader market.

With this information, we find it odd that Union Properties is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Final Word

Despite Union Properties' shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that Union Properties currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.

There are also other vital risk factors to consider before investing and we've discovered 2 warning signs for Union Properties that you should be aware of.

It's important to make sure you look for a great company, not just the first idea you come across. So take a peek at this free list of interesting companies with strong recent earnings growth (and a low P/E).
