Those Who Purchased GasLog (NYSE:GLOG) Shares Five Years Ago Have A 83% Loss To Show For It

Long term investing works well, but it doesn't always work for each individual stock. It hits us in the gut when we see fellow investors suffer a loss. Spare a thought for those who held GasLog Ltd. (NYSE:GLOG) for five whole years - as the share price tanked 83%. We also note that the stock has performed poorly over the last year, with the share price down 74%. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 16% in the last 90 days.

We really hope anyone holding through that price crash has a diversified portfolio. Even when you lose money, you don't have to lose the lesson.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During five years of share price growth, GasLog moved from a loss to profitability. However, it made a loss in the last twelve months, suggesting profit may be an unreliable metric at this stage. Other metrics may better explain the share price move.

We note that the dividend has remained healthy, so that wouldn't really explain the share price drop. It's not immediately clear to us why the stock price is down but further research might provide some answers.

    What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, GasLog's TSR for the last 5 years was -78%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

    A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 6.3% in the last year, GasLog shareholders lost 71% (even including dividends) . Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 26% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand GasLog better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - GasLog has 3 warning signs (and 1 which can't be ignored) we think you should know about.
