For many, the main point of investing is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But the main game is to find enough winners to more than offset the losers At this point some shareholders may be questioning their investment in First Real Estate Investment Trust (SGX:AW9U), since the last five years saw the share price fall 26%. The good news is that the stock is up 1.5% in the last week.
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Looking back five years, both First Real Estate Investment Trust’s share price and EPS declined; the latter at a rate of 15% per year. This fall in the EPS is worse than the 5.8% compound annual share price fall. So investors might expect EPS to bounce back — or they may have previously foreseen the EPS decline.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for First Real Estate Investment Trust the TSR over the last 5 years was 5.0%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. It’s nice to see that First Real Estate Investment Trust shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 3.8% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. That’s better than the annualised return of 1.0% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity.
