Should You Be Adding MAS Financial Services (NSE:MASFIN) To Your Watchlist Today?
It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'
If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in MAS Financial Services (NSE:MASFIN). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

MAS Financial Services's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.
If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. As a tree reaches steadily for the sky, MAS Financial Services's EPS has grown 23% each year, compound, over three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be smiling.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Not all of MAS Financial Services's revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers I've used might not be the best representation of the underlying business. While we note MAS Financial Services's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 3.7% to ₹4.2b. That's progress.

While profitability drives the upside, prudent investors always check the balance sheet, too.
Are MAS Financial Services Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Like standing at the lookout, surveying the horizon at sunrise, insider buying, for some investors, sparks joy. Because oftentimes, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. However, insiders are sometimes wrong, and we don't know the exact thinking behind their acquisitions.
Any way you look at it MAS Financial Services shareholders can gain quiet confidence from the fact that insiders shelled out ₹25m to buy stock, over the last year. And when you consider that there was no insider selling, you can understand why shareholders might believe that lady luck will grace this business. We also note that it was the Founder, Kamlesh Gandhi, who made the biggest single acquisition, paying ₹8.8m for shares at about ₹984 each.
On top of the insider buying, we can also see that MAS Financial Services insiders own a large chunk of the company. Indeed, with a collective holding of 71%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. To me this is a good sign because it suggests they will be incentivised to build value for shareholders over the long term. At the current share price, that insider holding is worth a whopping ₹32b. That means they have plenty of their own capital riding on the performance of the business!
Is MAS Financial Services Worth Keeping An Eye On?
Given my belief that share price follows earnings per share you can easily imagine how I feel about MAS Financial Services's strong EPS growth. Not only that, but we can see that insiders both own a lot of, and are buying more, shares in the company. So I do think this is one stock worth watching. You still need to take note of risks, for example - MAS Financial Services has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is potentially serious) we think you should know about.
The good news is that MAS Financial Services is not the only growth stock with insider buying. Here's a list of them... with insider buying in the last three months!
