Need To Know: Pinecrest Resources Ltd. (CVE:PCR) Insiders Have Been Buying Shares
It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Pinecrest Resources Ltd. (CVE:PCR).
What Is Insider Selling?
It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.
We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares. For example, a Columbia University study found that 'insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers'.

Pinecrest Resources Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The President Luke Alexander made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for CA$525k worth of shares at a price of CA$0.20 each. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of CA$0.65. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.

Insider Ownership of Pinecrest Resources
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Pinecrest Resources insiders own about CA$23m worth of shares. That equates to 38% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
So What Does This Data Suggest About Pinecrest Resources Insiders?
It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchases. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence. But on the other hand, the company made a loss during the last year, which makes us a little cautious. Insiders likely see value in Pinecrest Resources shares, given these transactions (along with notable insider ownership of the company).
