Match Group, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:MTCH) Stock On An Uptrend: Could Fundamentals Be Driving The Momentum?
Match Group's (NASDAQ:MTCH) stock is up by a considerable 12% over the past week. We wonder if and what role the company's financials play in that price change as a company's long-term fundamentals usually dictate market outcomes. Specifically, we decided to study Match Group's ROE in this article.
Return on equity or ROE is a key measure used to assess how efficiently a company's management is utilizing the company's capital. In simpler terms, it measures the profitability of a company in relation to shareholder's equity.

How Is ROE Calculated?
ROE can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Match Group is:
7.1% = US$248m ÷ US$3.5b (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2020).
The 'return' is the income the business earned over the last year. Another way to think of that is that for every $1 worth of equity, the company was able to earn $0.07 in profit.
Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?
Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.
A Side By Side comparison of Match Group's Earnings Growth And 7.1% ROE
On the face of it, Match Group's ROE is not much to talk about. Yet, a closer study shows that the company's ROE is similar to the industry average of 8.0%. Moreover, we are quite pleased to see that Match Group's net income grew significantly at a rate of 30% over the last five years. Taking into consideration that the ROE is not particularly high, we reckon that there could also be other factors at play which could be influencing the company's growth. For example, it is possible that the company's management has made some good strategic decisions, or that the company has a low payout ratio.
Next, on comparing Match Group's net income growth with the industry, we found that the company's reported growth is similar to the industry average growth rate of 30% in the same period.
The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. Has the market priced in the future outlook for MTCH?
