If You Had Bought NV Bekaert's (EBR:BEKB) Shares Three Years Ago You Would Be Down 60%
The truth is that if you invest for long enough, you're going to end up with some losing stocks. Long term NV Bekaert SA (EBR:BEKB) shareholders know that all too well, since the share price is down considerably over three years. Unfortunately, they have held through a 60% decline in the share price in that time. And the ride hasn't got any smoother in recent times over the last year, with the price 34% lower in that time. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 14% in the last three months.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the three years that the share price fell, NV Bekaert's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 27% each year. The 26% average annual share price decline is remarkably close to the EPS decline. So it seems like sentiment towards the stock hasn't changed all that much over time. Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for NV Bekaert the TSR over the last 3 years was -58%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
We regret to report that NV Bekaert shareholders are down 33% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 24%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 6.0% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand NV Bekaert better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for NV Bekaert you should know about.
