If You Had Bought MPH Health Care's (ETR:93M) Shares A Year Ago You Would Be Down 28%

It's easy to match the overall market return by buying an index fund. Active investors aim to buy stocks that vastly outperform the market - but in the process, they risk under-performance. For example, the MPH Health Care AG (ETR:93M) share price is down 28% in the last year. That's well below the market return of 11%. At least the damage isn't so bad if you look at the last three years, since the stock is down 20% in that time. There was little comfort for shareholders in the last week as the price declined a further 1.8%.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

MPH Health Care managed to increase earnings per share from a loss to a profit, over the last 12 months.

The result looks like a strong improvement to us, so we're surprised the market has sold down the shares. If the improved profitability is a sign of things to come, then right now may prove the perfect time to pop this stock on your watchlist.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

Investors should note that there's a difference between MPH Health Care's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Its history of dividend payouts mean that MPH Health Care's TSR, which was a 28% drop over the last year, was not as bad as the share price return.

A Different Perspective

MPH Health Care shareholders are down 28% for the year, but the market itself is up 11%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 8.0%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
