If You Had Bought Aegis Logistics (NSE:AEGISCHEM) Shares Five Years Ago You'd Have Earned148% Returns
The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. For example, the Aegis Logistics Limited (NSE:AEGISCHEM) share price has soared 148% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. On top of that, the share price is up 20% in about a quarter. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 22% in 90 days).

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Aegis Logistics' earnings per share are down 8.6% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.
This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
The modest 0.8% dividend yield is unlikely to be propping up the share price. In contrast revenue growth of 22% per year is probably viewed as evidence that Aegis Logistics is growing, a real positive. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Aegis Logistics' TSR for the last 5 years was 156%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Aegis Logistics provided a TSR of 2.9% over the last twelve months. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 21% a year, over half a decade) look better. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
