The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don’t use leverage) is 100% of your money. But if you buy shares in a really great company, you can more than double your money. For instance the Shimao Property Holdings Limited (HKG:813) share price is 194% higher than it was three years ago. Most would be happy with that. On top of that, the share price is up 20% in about a quarter.
To quote Buffett, ‘Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace…’ One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Shimao Property Holdings was able to grow its EPS at 22% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. This EPS growth is lower than the 43% average annual increase in the share price. This indicates that the market is feeling more optimistic on the stock, after the last few years of progress. It’s not unusual to see the market ‘re-rate’ a stock, after a few years of growth.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Shimao Property Holdings’s TSR for the last 3 years was 245%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It’s nice to see that Shimao Property Holdings shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 47% over the last year. That’s including the dividend. That’s better than the annualised return of 18% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
