Deceuninck (EBR:DECB) Share Prices Have Dropped 60% In The Last Three Years
If you are building a properly diversified stock portfolio, the chances are some of your picks will perform badly. But long term Deceuninck NV (EBR:DECB) shareholders have had a particularly rough ride in the last three year. Regrettably, they have had to cope with a 60% drop in the share price over that period. And more recent buyers are having a tough time too, with a drop of 34% in the last year. There was little comfort for shareholders in the last week as the price declined a further 1.8%.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Over the three years that the share price declined, Deceuninck's earnings per share (EPS) dropped significantly, falling to a loss. Since the company has fallen to a loss making position, it's hard to compare the change in EPS with the share price change. But it's safe to say we'd generally expect the share price to be lower as a result!

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Deceuninck's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Dividends have been really beneficial for Deceuninck shareholders, and that cash payout explains why its total shareholder loss of 59%, over the last 3 years, isn't as bad as the share price return.
A Different Perspective
We regret to report that Deceuninck shareholders are down 34% for the year (even including dividends) . Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 19%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 6.1% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
