While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the The Middleby Corporation (NASDAQ:MIDD) share price up 14% in a single quarter. But that cannot eclipse the less-than-impressive returns over the last three years. After all, the share price is down 28% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the three years that the share price fell, Middleby's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 1.1% each year. This reduction in EPS is slower than the 11% annual reduction in the share price. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, in the past.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. A Different Perspective

Investors in Middleby had a tough year, with a total loss of 23%, against a market gain of about 16%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 3.3% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
