4Sight Holdings Limited (JSE:4SI) Stocks Pounded By 27% But Not Lagging Market On Growth Or Pricing
4Sight Holdings Limited (JSE:4SI) shares have retraced a considerable 27% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. Of course, over the longer-term many would still wish they owned shares as the stock's price has soared 208% in the last twelve months.
Although its price has dipped substantially, 4Sight Holdings' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 14.8x might still make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in South Africa, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 8x and even P/E's below 5x are quite common. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Recent times have been quite advantageous for 4Sight Holdings as its earnings have been rising very briskly. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings growth will be enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

4Sight Holdings' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 128%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 123% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 13% shows it's noticeably more attractive on an annualised basis.
With this information, we can see why 4Sight Holdings is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are expecting this strong growth to continue and are willing to pay more for the stock.
What We Can Learn From 4Sight Holdings' P/E?
4Sight Holdings' shares may have retreated, but its P/E is still flying high. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that 4Sight Holdings maintains its high P/E on the strength of its recent three-year growth being higher than the wider market forecast, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
