Bowler Metcalf (JSE:BCF) Has Announced That Its Dividend Will Be Reduced To ZAR0.246
The board of Bowler Metcalf Limited (JSE:BCF) has announced that the dividend on 30th of October will be reduced by 8.9% from last year's ZAR0.27 to ZAR0.246. The dividend yield of 5.4% is still a nice boost to shareholder returns, despite the cut.

Bowler Metcalf's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Based on the last payment, Bowler Metcalf was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This indicates that a lot of the earnings are being reinvested into the business, with the aim of fueling growth.
Over the next year, EPS could expand by 0.4% if recent trends continue. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 43% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ZAR0.314 in 2013, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ZAR0.428. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 3.1% a year over that time. The dividend has seen some fluctuations in the past, so even though the dividend was raised this year, we should remember that it has been cut in the past.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. However, Bowler Metcalf's EPS was effectively flat over the past five years, which could stop the company from paying more every year. Growth of 0.4% may indicate that the company has limited investment opportunity so it is returning its earnings to shareholders instead. This could mean the dividend doesn't have the growth potential we look for going into the future.
In Summary
Even though the dividend was cut this year, we think Bowler Metcalf has the ability to make consistent payments in the future. The dividend has been at reasonable levels historically, but that hasn't translated into a consistent payment. The dividend looks okay, but there have been some issues in the past, so we would be a little bit cautious.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
