The board of UGI Corporation (NYSE:UGI) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 1st of January, with investors receiving $0.375 per share. This means that the annual payment will be 3.9% of the current stock price, which is in line with the average for the industry.
UGI's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. Prior to this announcement, UGI was quite comfortably covering its dividend with earnings and it was paying more than 75% of its free cash flow to shareholders. The business is earning enough to make the dividend feasible, but the cash payout ratio of 83% indicates it is more focused on returning cash to shareholders than growing the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 12.5% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 45%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

UGI Has A Solid Track Record
The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. The dividend has gone from an annual total of $0.87 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of $1.50. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 5.6% per annum over that time. Dividends have grown at a reasonable rate over this period, and without any major cuts in the payment over time, we think this is an attractive combination as it provides a nice boost to shareholder returns.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Earnings have grown at around 4.4% a year for the past five years, which isn't massive but still better than seeing them shrink. The company has been growing at a pretty soft 4.4% per annum, and is paying out quite a lot of its earnings to shareholders. While this isn't necessarily a negative, it definitely signals that dividend growth could be constrained in the future unless earnings start to pick up again.
In Summary
Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. While UGI is earning enough to cover the dividend, we are generally unimpressed with its future prospects. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
