According to the last reported balance sheet, Public Service Enterprise Group had liabilities of US$4.58b due within 12 months, and liabilities of US$34.8b due beyond 12 months. Offsetting this, it had US$186.0m in cash and US$2.36b in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities total US$36.8b more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.

This is a mountain of leverage even relative to its gargantuan market capitalization of US$42.6b. This suggests shareholders would be heavily diluted if the company needed to shore up its balance sheet in a hurry.

Looking at the balance sheet and taking into account all these factors, we do believe that debt is making Public Service Enterprise Group stock a bit risky. Some people like that sort of risk, but we're mindful of the potential pitfalls, so we'd probably prefer it carry less debt.
