MGE Energy (NASDAQ:MGEE) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year

MGE Energy's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
If it is predictable over a long period, even low dividend yields can be attractive. Prior to this announcement, MGE Energy's earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. In general, we consider cash flow to be more important than earnings, so we would be cautious about relying on the sustainability of this dividend.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 2.4%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 53% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
MGE Energy Has A Solid Track Record
The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. Since 2011, the dividend has gone from US$1.00 to US$1.55. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 4.5% a year over that time. While the consistency in the dividend payments is impressive, we think the relatively slow rate of growth is less attractive.
The Dividend Has Growth Potential
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. It's encouraging to see MGE Energy has been growing its earnings per share at 6.8% a year over the past five years. The company is paying out a lot of its cash as a dividend, but it looks okay based on the payout ratio.
Our Thoughts On MGE Energy's Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While MGE Energy is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
