The analysts covering Eneti Inc. (NYSE:NETI) delivered a dose of negativity to shareholders today, by making a substantial revision to their statutory forecasts for next year. Revenue estimates were cut sharply as analysts signalled a weaker outlook - perhaps a sign that investors should temper their expectations as well.

Following the latest downgrade, the four analysts covering Eneti provided consensus estimates of US$141m revenue in 2022, which would reflect a stressful 23% decline on its sales over the past 12 months. Prior to the latest estimates, the analysts were forecasting revenues of US$182m in 2022. The consensus view seems to have become more pessimistic on Eneti, noting the sizeable cut to revenue estimates in this update.

Another way we can view these estimates is in the context of the bigger picture, such as how the forecasts stack up against past performance, and whether forecasts are more or less bullish relative to other companies in the industry. These estimates imply that sales are expected to slow, with a forecast annualised revenue decline of 19% by the end of 2022. This indicates a significant reduction from annual growth of 10% over the last five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 1.2% annually for the foreseeable future. It's pretty clear that Eneti's revenues are expected to perform substantially worse than the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that analysts cut their revenue estimates for next year. They also expect company revenue to perform worse than the wider market. Overall, given the drastic downgrade to next year's forecasts, we'd be feeling a little more wary of Eneti going forwards.
