What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So when we looked at Golden Ocean Group (NASDAQ:GOGL) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Golden Ocean Group:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.066 = US$214m ÷ (US$3.5b - US$243m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).

Therefore, Golden Ocean Group has an ROCE of 6.6%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Shipping industry average of 9.4%.
