Some of the losses seen by insiders who purchased US$905.9k worth of ATN International, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATNI) shares over the past year were recovered after the stock increased by 13% over the past week. However, the purchase is proving to be an expensive wager as insiders are yet to get ahead of their losses which currently stand at US$147k since the time of purchase.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

ATN International Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Executive Chairman Michael T. Prior made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$311k worth of shares at a price of US$31.11 each. That means that even when the share price was higher than US$23.21 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.

In the last twelve months ATN International insiders were buying shares, but not selling. They paid about US$27.70 on average. I'd consider this a positive as it suggests insiders see value at around the current price. Insider Ownership

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. ATN International insiders own 32% of the company, currently worth about US$112m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

So What Do The ATN International Insider Transactions Indicate?

It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchase. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. When combined with notable insider ownership, these factors suggest ATN International insiders are well aligned, and quite possibly think the share price is too low. That's what I like to see!
