The board of Ubiquiti Inc. (NYSE:UI) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 9th of September, with investors receiving $0.60 per share. Including this payment, the dividend yield on the stock will be 1.2%, which is a modest boost for shareholders' returns.
While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that Ubiquiti's stock price has increased by 42% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.

Ubiquiti's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. Prior to this announcement, Ubiquiti's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.
If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 5.1% over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 47% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from $0.17 total annually to $2.40. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 30% a year over that time. Despite the rapid growth in the dividend over the past number of years, we have seen the payments go down the past as well, so that makes us cautious.
Ubiquiti Could Grow Its Dividend
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Ubiquiti has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 5.1% per annum. Since earnings per share is growing at an acceptable rate, and the payout policy is balanced, we think the company is positioning itself well to grow earnings and dividends in the future.
In Summary
Overall, we think Ubiquiti is a solid choice as a dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't raised this year. While the payout ratios are a good sign, we are less enthusiastic about the company's dividend record. This looks like it could be a good dividend stock going forward, but we would note that the payout ratio has been at higher levels in the past so it could happen again.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. To that end, Ubiquiti has 2 warning signs (and 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) we think you should know about. Is Ubiquiti not quite the opportunity you were looking for?
