Little Excitement Around SmartRent, Inc.'s (NYSE:SMRT) Revenues As Shares Take 26% Pounding
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the SmartRent, Inc. (NYSE:SMRT) share price has dived 26% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 61% loss during that time.
Since its price has dipped substantially, SmartRent may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.1x, since almost half of all companies in the Electronic industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.7x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does SmartRent's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
SmartRent hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

SmartRent's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 26%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 58% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 6.0% during the coming year according to the three analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 10%, which paints a poor picture.
In light of this, it's understandable that SmartRent's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
What Does SmartRent's P/S Mean For Investors?
SmartRent's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that SmartRent's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
