Fabrinet (NYSE:FN) Is Experiencing Growth In Returns On Capital

To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. Speaking of which, we noticed some great changes in Fabrinet's (NYSE:FN) returns on capital, so let's have a look.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for Fabrinet, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.16 = US$302m ÷ (US$2.5b - US$663m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).

Thus, Fabrinet has an ROCE of 16%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 10% generated by the Electronic industry.

What Can We Tell From Fabrinet's ROCE Trend?

The trends we've noticed at Fabrinet are quite reassuring. The data shows that returns on capital have increased substantially over the last five years to 16%. Basically the business is earning more per dollar of capital invested and in addition to that, 88% more capital is being employed now too. This can indicate that there's plenty of opportunities to invest capital internally and at ever higher rates, a combination that's common among multi-baggers.

The Bottom Line On Fabrinet's ROCE

All in all, it's terrific to see that Fabrinet is reaping the rewards from prior investments and is growing its capital base. Since the stock has returned a staggering 240% to shareholders over the last five years, it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. In light of that, we think it's worth looking further into this stock because if Fabrinet can keep these trends up, it could have a bright future ahead.
