Coherent Corp. (NYSE:COHR) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 42% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 27%.

Even after such a large jump in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Coherent's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.1x is worth a mention when it essentially matches the median P/S in the United States' Electronic industry. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Coherent Has Been Performing

Recent times have been advantageous for Coherent as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to wane, which has kept the P/S ratio from rising. If the company manages to stay the course, then investors should be rewarded with a share price that matches its revenue figures.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Coherent would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 15% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 66% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 13% during the coming year according to the analysts following the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 12% growth , the company is positioned for a comparable revenue result.

With this information, we can see why Coherent is trading at a fairly similar P/S to the industry. Apparently shareholders are comfortable to simply hold on while the company is keeping a low profile.

The Final Word

Its shares have lifted substantially and now Coherent's P/S is back within range of the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

Our look at Coherent's revenue growth estimates show that its P/S is about what we expect, as both metrics follow closely with the industry averages. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenue won't throw up any surprises. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to support the share price at these levels.
