Revenues Not Telling The Story For Arlo Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:ARLO) After Shares Rise 29%

Arlo Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:ARLO) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 29% gain in the last month alone. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 33%.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, it's still not a stretch to say that Arlo Technologies' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.8x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Electronic industry in the United States, where the median P/S ratio is around 1.6x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does Arlo Technologies' Recent Performance Look Like?

Arlo Technologies hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the market is expecting its poor revenue performance to improve, keeping the P/S from dropping. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Keen to find out how analysts think Arlo Technologies' future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Arlo Technologies' to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered virtually the same number to the company's top line as the year before. Fortunately, a few good years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by 26% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 4.2% as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 16% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

With this information, we find it interesting that Arlo Technologies is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

What Does Arlo Technologies' P/S Mean For Investors?

Its shares have lifted substantially and now Arlo Technologies' P/S is back within range of the industry median. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our look at the analysts forecasts of Arlo Technologies' revenue prospects has shown that its inferior revenue outlook isn't negatively impacting its P/S as much as we would have predicted. When we see companies with a relatively weaker revenue outlook compared to the industry, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/S lower. A positive change is needed in order to justify the current price-to-sales ratio.
