We're Not Very Worried About UTStarcom Holdings' (NASDAQ:UTSI) Cash Burn Rate
Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, biotech and mining exploration companies often lose money for years before finding success with a new treatment or mineral discovery. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.
So should UTStarcom Holdings (NASDAQ:UTSI) shareholders be worried about its cash burn? In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. Let's start with an examination of the business' cash, relative to its cash burn.
How Long Is UTStarcom Holdings' Cash Runway?
You can calculate a company's cash runway by dividing the amount of cash it has by the rate at which it is spending that cash. As at December 2024, UTStarcom Holdings had cash of US$44m and no debt. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through US$4.6m. Therefore, from December 2024 it had 9.6 years of cash runway. Even though this is but one measure of the company's cash burn, the thought of such a long cash runway warms our bellies in a comforting way. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.

How Well Is UTStarcom Holdings Growing?
On balance, we think it's mildly positive that UTStarcom Holdings trimmed its cash burn by 2.5% over the last twelve months. Unfortunately, however, operating revenue declined by 31% during the period. Considering both these metrics, we're a little concerned about how the company is developing. In reality, this article only makes a short study of the company's growth data. This graph of historic earnings and revenue shows how UTStarcom Holdings is building its business over time.
Can UTStarcom Holdings Raise More Cash Easily?
UTStarcom Holdings seems to be in a fairly good position, in terms of cash burn, but we still think it's worthwhile considering how easily it could raise more money if it wanted to. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
Since it has a market capitalisation of US$23m, UTStarcom Holdings' US$4.6m in cash burn equates to about 20% of its market value. Given that situation, it's fair to say the company wouldn't have much trouble raising more cash for growth, but shareholders would be somewhat diluted.
How Risky Is UTStarcom Holdings' Cash Burn Situation?
On this analysis of UTStarcom Holdings' cash burn, we think its cash runway was reassuring, while its falling revenue has us a bit worried. Cash burning companies are always on the riskier side of things, but after considering all of the factors discussed in this short piece, we're not too worried about its rate of cash burn. Readers need to have a sound understanding of business risks before investing in a stock, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for UTStarcom Holdings that potential shareholders should take into account before putting money into a stock.
