Quantum Corporation's (NASDAQ:QMCO) Share Price Boosted 339% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too
Quantum Corporation (NASDAQ:QMCO) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 339% gain in the last month alone. The last month tops off a massive increase of 271% in the last year.
Although its price has surged higher, Quantum may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x, considering almost half of all companies in the Tech industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.1x and even P/S higher than 4x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

How Has Quantum Performed Recently?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Quantum's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Quantum's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 28% decrease to the company's top line. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 23% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 2.5% during the coming year according to the two analysts following the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 6.6%.
With this information, we are not surprised that Quantum is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Key Takeaway
Despite Quantum's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that Quantum's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
