Despite an already strong run, Optical Cable Corporation (NASDAQ:OCC) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 32% in the last thirty days. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 33%.

Even after such a large jump in price, Optical Cable may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x, considering almost half of all companies in the Communications industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2.2x and even P/S higher than 5x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Optical Cable Has Been Performing

Revenue has risen at a steady rate over the last year for Optical Cable, which is generally not a bad outcome. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to degrade, which has repressed the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Optical Cable would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 5.8% gain to the company's revenues. The solid recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 9.2% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 9.4% shows it's noticeably less attractive.

With this in consideration, it's easy to understand why Optical Cable's P/S falls short of the mark set by its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Final Word

Despite Optical Cable's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of Optical Cable revealed its three-year revenue trends are contributing to its low P/S, given they look worse than current industry expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price experience a reversal of fortunes anytime soon.
