Did You Miss Neonode's (NASDAQ:NEON) Impressive 231% Share Price Gain?

Neonode Inc. (NASDAQ:NEON) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 12% in the last quarter. Despite this, the stock is a strong performer over the last year, no doubt about that. Like an eagle, the share price soared 231% in that time. So we think most shareholders won't be too upset about the recent fall. Investors should be wondering whether the business itself has the fundamental value required to continue to drive gains.

Because Neonode made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

Neonode actually shrunk its revenue over the last year, with a reduction of 30%. So we would not have expected the share price to rise 231%. This is a good example of how buyers can push up prices even before the fundamental metrics show much growth. Of course, it could be that the market expected this revenue drop.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Neonode shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 231% over one year. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 11% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with Neonode , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
