What Is Insider Selling?

Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year'.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Lantronix

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when insider Christopher Woodruff bought US$1.7m worth of shares at a price of US$3.45 per share. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$4.50), we still think insider buying is a positive. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid US$1.9m for 591.50k shares. But they sold 74.93k shares for US$255k. In total, Lantronix insiders bought more than they sold over the last year.
