The one-year earnings decline is not helping Kimball Electronics' (NASDAQ:KE share price, as stock falls another 19% in past week
The simplest way to benefit from a rising market is to buy an index fund. But if you buy individual stocks, you can do both better or worse than that. For example, the Kimball Electronics, Inc. (NASDAQ:KE) share price is down 36% in the last year. That's disappointing when you consider the market returned 4.8%. At least the damage isn't so bad if you look at the last three years, since the stock is down 24% in that time. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 26% in the last three months. However, one could argue that the price has been influenced by the general market, which is down 11% in the same timeframe.
With the stock having lost 19% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Unfortunately Kimball Electronics reported an EPS drop of 85% for the last year. The share price fall of 36% isn't as bad as the reduction in earnings per share. So despite the weak per-share profits, some investors are probably relieved the situation wasn't more difficult.

A Different Perspective
Investors in Kimball Electronics had a tough year, with a total loss of 36%, against a market gain of about 4.8%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 1.7% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Kimball Electronics better, we need to consider many other factors.
