Itron (NASDAQ:ITRI) climbs 3.1% this week, taking three-year gains to 85%
One simple way to benefit from the stock market is to buy an index fund. But if you choose individual stocks with prowess, you can make superior returns. For example, Itron, Inc. (NASDAQ:ITRI) shareholders have seen the share price rise 85% over three years, well in excess of the market return (20%, not including dividends).
After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During three years of share price growth, Itron moved from a loss to profitability. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd expect the share price to be up.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
It is of course excellent to see how Itron has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. Take a more thorough look at Itron's financial health with this free report on its balance sheet.
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Itron shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 78% over the last year. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 8%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time.
