Does Gauzy (NASDAQ:GAUZ) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?
David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We note that Gauzy Ltd. (NASDAQ:GAUZ) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
What Risk Does Debt Bring?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

What Is Gauzy's Debt?
The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Gauzy had debt of US$36.9m at the end of September 2024, a reduction from US$95.5m over a year. However, it does have US$9.36m in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about US$27.5m.
How Strong Is Gauzy's Balance Sheet?
According to the last reported balance sheet, Gauzy had liabilities of US$50.9m due within 12 months, and liabilities of US$35.3m due beyond 12 months. On the other hand, it had cash of US$9.36m and US$29.7m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by US$47.2m.
While this might seem like a lot, it is not so bad since Gauzy has a market capitalization of US$155.3m, and so it could probably strengthen its balance sheet by raising capital if it needed to. But it's clear that we should definitely closely examine whether it can manage its debt without dilution. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if Gauzy can strengthen its balance sheet over time. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.
Over 12 months, Gauzy reported revenue of US$94m, which is a gain of 30%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. With any luck the company will be able to grow its way to profitability.
Caveat Emptor
Even though Gauzy managed to grow its top line quite deftly, the cold hard truth is that it is losing money on the EBIT line. Indeed, it lost a very considerable US$36m at the EBIT level. When we look at that and recall the liabilities on its balance sheet, relative to cash, it seems unwise to us for the company to have any debt. Quite frankly we think the balance sheet is far from match-fit, although it could be improved with time. However, it doesn't help that it burned through US$55m of cash over the last year. So in short it's a really risky stock. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it.
