Some ClearOne, Inc. (NASDAQ:CLRO) Shareholders Look For Exit As Shares Take 59% Pounding
ClearOne, Inc. (NASDAQ:CLRO) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 59% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 48% share price drop.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, there still wouldn't be many who think ClearOne's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1x is worth a mention when the median P/S in the United States' Communications industry is similar at about 1.3x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has ClearOne Performed Recently?
For example, consider that ClearOne's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. One possibility is that the P/S is moderate because investors think the company might still do enough to be in line with the broader industry in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, ClearOne would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 32%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 59% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 11% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.
With this information, we find it concerning that ClearOne is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh on the share price eventually.
What We Can Learn From ClearOne's P/S?
Following ClearOne's share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
The fact that ClearOne currently trades at a P/S on par with the rest of the industry is surprising to us since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term, all while the industry is set to grow. When we see revenue heading backwards in the context of growing industry forecasts, it'd make sense to expect a possible share price decline on the horizon, sending the moderate P/S lower. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
