Boxlight (NASDAQ:BOXL) Might Have The Makings Of A Multi-Bagger
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So on that note, Boxlight (NASDAQ:BOXL) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Boxlight:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.051 = US$7.3m ÷ (US$180m - US$35m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2023).
Therefore, Boxlight has an ROCE of 5.1%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Tech industry average of 7.2%.

The Trend Of ROCE
Boxlight has recently broken into profitability so their prior investments seem to be paying off. Shareholders would no doubt be pleased with this because the business was loss-making five years ago but is is now generating 5.1% on its capital. In addition to that, Boxlight is employing 1,462% more capital than previously which is expected of a company that's trying to break into profitability. We like this trend, because it tells us the company has profitable reinvestment opportunities available to it, and if it continues going forward that can lead to a multi-bagger performance.
One more thing to note, Boxlight has decreased current liabilities to 20% of total assets over this period, which effectively reduces the amount of funding from suppliers or short-term creditors. So shareholders would be pleased that the growth in returns has mostly come from underlying business performance.
The Bottom Line On Boxlight's ROCE
In summary, it's great to see that Boxlight has managed to break into profitability and is continuing to reinvest in its business. However the stock is down a substantial 92% in the last five years so there could be other areas of the business hurting its prospects. Regardless, we think the underlying fundamentals warrant this stock for further investigation.
