Lacklustre Performance Is Driving Airgain, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AIRG) 25% Price Drop
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Airgain, Inc. (NASDAQ:AIRG) shares are down a considerable 25% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 68% loss during that time.
Since its price has dipped substantially, Airgain may be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.6x, considering almost half of all companies in the Electronic industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2.5x and even P/S higher than 6x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Airgain's Recent Performance Look Like?
With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Airgain has been relatively sluggish. Perhaps the market is expecting the current trend of poor revenue growth to continue, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Airgain's to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 6.8%. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen an unpleasant 14% overall drop in revenue. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 1.7% over the next year. With the industry predicted to deliver 15% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.
With this information, we can see why Airgain is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Final Word
Airgain's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Airgain maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
