Gartner (IT) Stock May Sit Below Fair Value Despite Fresh AI Demand News

Gartner stock has had a tough run over the past year, yet current valuation checks suggest the share price may now sit below what its Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) and earnings multiple signals imply for intrinsic value.

  • Over the past 12 months the share price has fallen 51.8%, which puts recent gains into context and raises the question of whether sentiment has moved further than the fundamentals.
  • Recent headlines around Gartner's AI forecasts and its role in shaping spending on AI infrastructure may support expectations for long term cash flow. At the same time, increased use of AI automation and potential disruption to traditional IT spending patterns can add uncertainty to those assumptions.
  • The stock currently scores 4 out of 6 on Simply Wall St's valuation checks, which points to a mixed picture rather than a clear bargain or clear overvaluation.

For investors, the debate is whether Gartner's recent share price weakness and the apparent discount to intrinsic value together offer enough compensation for the risks around how its AI related outlook ultimately plays out.

Find out why Gartner's -51.8% return over the last year is lagging behind its peers.

Is Gartner a Bargain on Cash Flow?

The Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) model here uses projected free cash flows to estimate what Gartner shares could be worth today. Gartner generated last twelve month free cash flow of about $1.26b, and the model assumes these cash flows continue to grow rather than shrink over time. On that basis, the 2 Stage Free Cash Flow to Equity model arrives at an intrinsic value of about $290.67 per share.

That figure sits well above the current share price, implying the stock screens around 43.0% undervalued on this cash flow view. Recent headlines about Gartner raising its 2026 IT spending forecast because of AI demand are one reason the long term cash flow assumptions in the model remain supportive even as the share price has fallen sharply.

On this DCF view, Gartner stock appears undervalued relative to the cash flows currently reflected in the model.

Our Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis suggests Gartner is undervalued by 43.0%. Track this in your watchlist or portfolio, or discover 49 more high quality undervalued stocks.

Is Gartner Still Cheap on Earnings?

The P/E ratio fits Gartner reasonably well because earnings are a key focus for many investors in research and consulting stocks. Gartner trades on a P/E of about 15.0x, which sits below the IT industry average of roughly 16.9x and also below the peer group average of about 13.2x.

The fair P/E that accounts for Gartner's size, margins and risk profile is estimated at 27.1x. That is above where the stock trades today, which indicates a sizeable gap between the price that is currently implied by earnings and the level this model suggests could be justified.

On this earnings multiple view, Gartner stock appears undervalued compared with the level implied by its fair P/E.

The Gartner Narrative: What Would Justify Today's Price?

Simply Wall St Narratives pick up where Gartner's valuation puzzle leaves off. Each one sets out the specific assumptions on growth, margins and earnings that would need to hold for the stock to be worth materially more or materially less than today's price. It also lays out the building blocks behind its fair value so you can compare those expectations with Gartner's reported results over time. They sit within Gartner's Community page on Simply Wall St.

Community views on Gartner sit far apart, with one side seeing material upside and the other arguing the stock already prices in most of the story.

The Bottom Line

For Gartner, both the Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) intrinsic value estimate and the earnings multiple view point to the stock looking undervalued, even though the broader valuation checks are mixed rather than outright strong. That gap between price and these models only matters if Gartner can deliver the cash flows and earnings profile those frameworks assume. The real hinge for investors is whether AI related demand supports the research and consulting business without eroding it through cheaper tools and automation. The key question is whether the current discount reflects an opportunity or a fair pricing of that disruption risk.

derek_3wsdg on Teladoc Health ·

You’ve overlooked the activist investor factor. Travis Cocke’s Voss has announced 5% ownership through a 13G filing. They’ve added to that 5% since, and in doing so, have created a structural trap door for 27.42 Million Shares actively sold short. Chuck will announce lots of positives on July 29 but it’s what Voss announces shortly after that will rock the overextended Teledoc shorts. The Walmart partnership is the tip of the iceberg. The market is missing the sheer regulatory and enterprise friction of modern corporate healthcare. Teladoc isn't a "consumer app"; it is the primary digital infrastructure integrated directly into the legacy backends of Tier-1 insurance companies and fortune 500 employers, covering 105 million+ lives. Teladoc is acting as the digital top-of-funnel engine for the world's largest retailer. If Voss pushes the narrative that Teladoc is effectively the outsourced digital brain of Walmart's entire healthcare footprint, the fair value shifts from a basic health multiple to an enterprise distribution premium. Additionally , we are in a structural gold rush for high-quality, legally compliant, longitudinal medical data to train vertical healthcare AI models. Large technology hyperscalers and pharmaceutical giants cannot simply scrape the internet for this; they need structured clinical inputs. Teladoc sits on one of the largest de-identified virtual medical datasets on earth. From the activist playbook , we’ll see Voss demand the immediate creation of a Data & Diagnostics Licensing Division, transforming a legacy liability into an incredibly high-margin, pure-software data asset that requires zero human clinician hours to scale. Chuck is doing great work and deserves credi5 for the Teledoc turnaround but it will be Travis Cocke who will be responsible for a share price way beyond your $15 valuation.
