DXC Technology Company (NYSE:DXC) Shares Fly 28% But Investors Aren't Buying For Growth
DXC Technology Company (NYSE:DXC) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 28% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 25% over that time.
Although its price has surged higher, DXC Technology may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x, since almost half of all companies in the IT industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2.3x and even P/S higher than 8x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does DXC Technology's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
DXC Technology could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as DXC Technology's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 4.1%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 17% in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the nine analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 1.5% over the next year. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 18%, which paints a poor picture.
With this information, we are not surprised that DXC Technology is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
What Does DXC Technology's P/S Mean For Investors?
DXC Technology's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
It's clear to see that DXC Technology maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
