A Piece Of The Puzzle Missing From Veritone, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:VERI) 45% Share Price Climb

Veritone, Inc. (NASDAQ:VERI) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 45% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 22% over that time.

Even after such a large jump in price, Veritone may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.3x, considering almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 5.5x and even P/S higher than 12x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does Veritone's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Veritone's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Veritone's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Veritone's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 3.1% decrease to the company's top line. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 31% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 23% during the coming year according to the four analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 16%, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Veritone's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Key Takeaway

Even after such a strong price move, Veritone's P/S still trails the rest of the industry. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Veritone's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't contributing to its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see strong growth forecasts like this, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future revenues could see a lot of volatility.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Veritone (of which 1 is potentially serious!) you should know about.
