There's No Escaping Thoughtworks Holding, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:TWKS) Muted Revenues Despite A 69% Share Price Rise

Thoughtworks Holding, Inc. (NASDAQ:TWKS) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 69% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 17% over that time.

Even after such a large jump in price, Thoughtworks Holding may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.4x, since almost half of all companies in the IT industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.9x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Thoughtworks Holding Has Been Performing

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Thoughtworks Holding's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Thoughtworks Holding's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Thoughtworks Holding?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Thoughtworks Holding's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 17% decrease to the company's top line. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 15% in total. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 1.0% as estimated by the eleven analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 8.5%, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we can see why Thoughtworks Holding is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Thoughtworks Holding's P/S

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Thoughtworks Holding's P/S close to the industry median. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of Thoughtworks Holding's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
