There May Be Some Bright Spots In Hackett Group's (NASDAQ:HCKT) Earnings
Investors were disappointed with the weak earnings posted by The Hackett Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:HCKT ). Despite the soft profit numbers, our analysis has optimistic about the overall quality of the income statement.
A Closer Look At Hackett Group's Earnings
One key financial ratio used to measure how well a company converts its profit to free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio. To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.
Hackett Group has an accrual ratio of -0.15 for the year to June 2025. That implies it has very good cash conversion, and that its earnings in the last year actually significantly understate its free cash flow. In fact, it had free cash flow of US$35m in the last year, which was a lot more than its statutory profit of US$17.0m. Hackett Group's free cash flow actually declined over the last year, which is disappointing, like non-biodegradable balloons.

Our Take On Hackett Group's Profit Performance
Hackett Group's accrual ratio is solid, and indicates strong free cash flow, as we discussed, above. Because of this, we think Hackett Group's earnings potential is at least as good as it seems, and maybe even better! Unfortunately, though, its earnings per share actually fell back over the last year. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly.
