A Closer Look At BTCS' Earnings

In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.

That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.

BTCS has an accrual ratio of 0.39 for the year to September 2025. Statistically speaking, that's a real negative for future earnings. To wit, the company did not generate one whit of free cashflow in that time. Over the last year it actually had negative free cash flow of US$7.2m, in contrast to the aforementioned profit of US$54.4m. We also note that BTCS' free cash flow was actually negative last year as well, so we could understand if shareholders were bothered by its outflow of US$7.2m. Unfortunately for shareholders, the company has also been issuing new shares, diluting their share of future earnings.

That might leave you wondering what analysts are forecasting in terms of future profitability. Luckily, you can click here to see an interactive graph depicting future profitability, based on their estimates.

In order to understand the potential for per share returns, it is essential to consider how much a company is diluting shareholders. BTCS expanded the number of shares on issue by 170% over the last year. As a result, its net income is now split between a greater number of shares. Per share metrics like EPS help us understand how much actual shareholders are benefitting from the company's profits, while the net income level gives us a better view of the company's absolute size. How Is Dilution Impacting BTCS' Earnings Per Share (EPS)?

Three years ago, BTCS lost money. The good news is that profit was up 1,331% in the last twelve months. On the other hand, earnings per share are only up 762% over the same period. So you can see that the dilution has had a fairly significant impact on shareholders.

Changes in the share price do tend to reflect changes in earnings per share, in the long run. So BTCS shareholders will want to see that EPS figure continue to increase. But on the other hand, we'd be far less excited to learn profit (but not EPS) was improving. For the ordinary retail shareholder, EPS is a great measure to check your hypothetical "share" of the company's profit.

Our Take On BTCS' Profit Performance

In conclusion, BTCS has weak cashflow relative to earnings, which indicates lower quality earnings, and the dilution means its earnings per share growth is weaker than its profit growth. Considering all this we'd argue BTCS' profits probably give an overly generous impression of its sustainable level of profitability. With this in mind, we wouldn't consider investing in a stock unless we had a thorough understanding of the risks. To that end, you should learn about the 4 warning signs we've spotted with BTCS (including 3 which make us uncomfortable).

In this article we've looked at a number of factors that can impair the utility of profit numbers, and we've come away cautious. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae. Leverage on its own is close to useless as a screen right now, because so much corporate debt was termed out at 2 to 3% and has not repriced. A business at three times leverage with nothing due until 2031 is in a completely different position from the same ratio rolling next year. Screen on weighted average maturity and the schedule behind it.
