You may think that with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2x Aware, Inc. (NASDAQ:AWRE) is definitely a stock worth checking out, seeing as almost half of all the Software companies in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4.5x and even P/S above 11x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Aware Has Been Performing

Aware has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think this respectable revenue growth might actually underperform the broader industry in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Aware's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

Aware's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 12% gain to the company's revenues. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see revenue up by 74% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 15% shows it's noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we find it odd that Aware is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

What We Can Learn From Aware's P/S?

It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our examination of Aware revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't boosting its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we assume there are some significant underlying risks to the company's ability to make money which is applying downwards pressure on the P/S ratio. While recent revenue trends over the past medium-term suggest that the risk of a price decline is low, investors appear to perceive a likelihood of revenue fluctuations in the future.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 3 warning signs for Aware (1 is concerning!) that you need to be mindful of.
