Lacklustre Performance Is Driving Sphere 3D Corp.'s (NASDAQ:ANY) 30% Price Drop
Sphere 3D Corp. (NASDAQ:ANY) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 30% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 71% share price decline.
After such a large drop in price, Sphere 3D may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.9x, since almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 5.5x and even P/S higher than 13x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

How Has Sphere 3D Performed Recently?
With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Sphere 3D has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the share price, and thus the P/S ratio. If the company manages to stay the course, then investors should be rewarded with a share price that matches its revenue figures.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Sphere 3D would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 38%. This great performance means it was also able to deliver immense revenue growth over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a tremendous job of growing revenue over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the only analyst covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 7.1% over the next year. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 26%, which paints a poor picture.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Sphere 3D's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Final Word
Sphere 3D's P/S looks about as weak as its stock price lately. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that Sphere 3D's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Sphere 3D's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
