There's No Escaping Daqo New Energy Corp.'s (NYSE:DQ) Muted Revenues Despite A 28% Share Price Rise

The Daqo New Energy Corp. (NYSE:DQ) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 28%. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 16% over that time.

Although its price has surged higher, Daqo New Energy may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.9x, since almost half of all companies in the Semiconductor industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4.3x and even P/S higher than 10x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Daqo New Energy Has Been Performing

Daqo New Energy could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Daqo New Energy's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 53%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 49% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 14% per annum as estimated by the nine analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 25% growth per annum, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

With this in consideration, its clear as to why Daqo New Energy's P/S is falling short industry peers. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Key Takeaway

Daqo New Energy's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Daqo New Energy's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
