Pinning Down Silicon Laboratories Inc.'s (NASDAQ:SLAB) P/S Is Difficult Right Now
Silicon Laboratories Inc.'s (NASDAQ:SLAB) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 6.2x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the Semiconductor industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios below 4.1x and even P/S below 1.6x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does Silicon Laboratories' Recent Performance Look Like?
Silicon Laboratories could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the market is expecting the poor revenue to reverse, justifying it's current high P/S.. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Silicon Laboratories would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 47% decrease to the company's top line. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 10% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 38% during the coming year according to the eight analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 39%, which is not materially different.
With this information, we find it interesting that Silicon Laboratories is trading at a high P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.
The Final Word
It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
Analysts are forecasting Silicon Laboratories' revenues to only grow on par with the rest of the industry, which has lead to the high P/S ratio being unexpected. When we see revenue growth that just matches the industry, we don't expect elevates P/S figures to remain inflated for the long-term. Unless the company can jump ahead of the rest of the industry in the short-term, it'll be a challenge to maintain the share price at current levels.
