Impinj, Inc. (NASDAQ:PI) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 28% gain in the last month alone. The annual gain comes to 275% following the latest surge, making investors sit up and take notice.

Following the firm bounce in price, Impinj's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 18x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to other companies in the Semiconductor industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios below 4x and even P/S below 1.6x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

How Impinj Has Been Performing

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Impinj's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the market is expecting the poor revenue to reverse, justifying it's current high P/S.. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

Impinj's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. However, a few strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 100% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been great for the company, but investors will want to ask why it has slowed to such an extent.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the ten analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 25% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 25% each year, which is not materially different.

With this information, we find it interesting that Impinj is trading at a high P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.

What Does Impinj's P/S Mean For Investors?

Impinj's P/S has grown nicely over the last month thanks to a handy boost in the share price. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Given Impinj's future revenue forecasts are in line with the wider industry, the fact that it trades at an elevated P/S is somewhat surprising. The fact that the revenue figures aren't setting the world alight has us doubtful that the company's elevated P/S can be sustainable for the long term. A positive change is needed in order to justify the current price-to-sales ratio.
